Accelerating Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Academic Medical Centers
Past Event
Medical product ideation, prototyping, and development are cornerstones for identifying unmet clinical needs and traversing the complexities of the research & development (R&D) process within academic medical research organizations. Commercially translating the academic R&D process to forming a new company and/or aligning with industry-sponsored research partners requires knowledge and skill sets not otherwise traditionally provided in engineering, medical, or even business schools. Innovation and entrepreneurship are the foundation for academic commercial translation. This talk makes the case that innovation and entrepreneurship are disciplines with established tools and methods that must be properly harnessed in order to successfully translate medical products into commercial successes while maintaining high standards for the associated clinical and scientific research. This talk is relevant to attendees who seek to translate their academic medical research to starting a viable company, licensing the technology to an incumbent company, or facilitating a sponsored research agreement for further university-based development. Speakers: Michael Becich, MD, PhD, Associate Vice-Chancellor for Informatics in the Health Sciences and Chair of Department of Biomedical Informatics, University of Pittsburgh, and Co-Director of the Center for Commercial Application (CCA) of Healthcare Data. Donald P. Taylor, PhD, MBA, CEO & Managing Director at bioStratica, LLC, Adjunct professor of Bioengineering (University of Pittsburgh) and Information Systems (Carnegie Mellon University), and Co-Director of the Center for Commercial Applications of Healthcare Data.
